Intermediate Strings Requirements

 IN-PERSON AUDITION REQUIREMENTS

INTERMEDIATE STRING ENSEMBLE

AN ENSEMBLE FOR STUDENTS OF SUZUKI BOOK 2-3 LEVEL OR EQUIVALENT

Required Techniques and Skills for Intermediate String Ensemble

  • All requirements from Beginning String Ensemble
  • Students should demonstrate:

    - Consistently correct intonation

    - Appropriate use of bow

    - Appropriate usage of relevant terminology

      (including instrument parts, musical terms, etc.)

    - Playing and recognizing notation on all strings across two                    octaves for required scales

  • Basic knowledge of instrument terminology: parts of instrument and bow, bow direction, rhythm vs pitch, etc.

Emerging Techniques and Skills for Intermediate String Ensemble

  • Students may have a beginning understanding and application of vibrato
  • Violin students should understand the basic concept of shifting. Some repertoire may explore this skill throughout the year.

2025-2026 In-Person Audition Dates

  • Saturday June 7th from 9:00am - 1:00pm
  • Friday June 13th from 5:00pm - 8:00pm
  • Saturday June 14th from 9:00am - 1:00pm

Suzuki Books (no. 2):

  • Any solo from Bourree to the end of Book 2
  • Any solo from Book 3

Solo time for Violin/Viola (Blackwell)

  • Any solo from Volume 1

VIOLA 

Scales     

  • C and D Major (2 Octaves)
  • E Melodic Minor (2 Octaves)
  • B flat Major (1 Octave)
  • Must be fluent in all chromatic changes within first position (low first finger, high third, and fourth fingers)
  • Please see written scales for reference
